Harishchandra Ghat - A sacred place to scatter ashes after cremation

Historically, Hindu cremations would take place near a river and the family would immerse the ashes in the river after cremation.

In South Australia, City of Port Adelaide and Enfield has supported Vishva Hindu Parishad of Australia (SA) in creating a sacred place where Hindus, Jains, Buddhists, Sikhs and anyone else can farewell their loved ones by immersing the ashes in the river.

The Name

We have named this place as ‘Harishchandra Ghat’, after the famous and religiously significant riverbank next to the Ganges River, in Varanasi, India, where if a person is cremated they attain Moksha (Salvation).

Permitted use

Harishchandra Ghat is now the designated place to disperse ashes after cremations and other related religious rituals. In addition, we can dispose the ashes from the Hawan/Homam as well. Through this project Vishva Hindu Parishad of Australia provides a culturally sensitive and accessible space for people of South Australia, who may want to scatter ashes of their loved ones to complete the journey of life after death.

Management

This site is reserved for use by the Hindu community, Monday to Friday from 6 am to 11 am.

This area is managed and maintained by Vishva Hindu Parishad of Australia (SA) but it is the responsibility of the entire Hindu community to ensure that we follow few regulations and be under the guidelines all the time. In addition to providing ongoing support and helpline services to maintain this space. We are here to answer all your queries and share our experiences. Please reach out today and be a part of our family network.
